Day 5 - Pamukkale

Embark on an early morning journey to one of the most enchanting destinations among the Seven Churches of Asia, known as Sardeis (Rev. 1:11; 3:1-4), now recognized as Sart. This city, once the capital of the ancient Lydian kingdom during the 6th century BC, is depicted in Revelation as a church in decline. During our visit, we’ll explore the magnificent Temple of Artemis, tour the meticulously restored gymnasium, and witness the reconstructed Synagogue. Additionally, we’ll have the opportunity to view the final sections of the royal Persian Road, which stretches from Susa to Sardeis, a remarkable testament to the legacy of Cyrus the Great.

Continuing our pilgrimage, we’ll head to Philadelphia (Rev. 1:11; 3:7), now known as Alasehir, which stands as another of the Seven Churches of Asia. Notably, Philadelphia is the only church without criticism in the Book of Revelation. Our exploration here will lead us to the remnants of a Byzantine basilica constructed from brick, featuring impressive high arches and remarkable 11th-century frescoes.

Overnight: Pamukkale

Day 6: Kusadasi

Today, start the day exploring Hierapolis, whose name translates to “Sacred City,” originally served as a hub for pagan cults before undergoing a transformation into a Christian centre during the first century. Tradition holds that the Apostle Philip resided in and was eventually martyred in Hierapolis. It is believed that the hot springs of Hierapolis, in contrast to the cold mountain springs near Colossae, played a role in addressing the spiritual condition of the “lukewarm” Laodiceans (Rev. 3:14-22). This historical connection between the cities is what underlies Paul’s mention of Hierapolis and Laodicea in his letter to the Colossians (Colossians 4:13).

Laodicea (Rev. 3:14-22) boasts extensive ruins to explore, including a well-preserved stadium and remnants of an advanced water system. Nearby Colossae is renowned in Christian circles as the recipient of Paul’s epistle to the Colossians. Unfortunately, Colossae has faded into historical obscurity, leaving nothing to be seen today.

As we conclude our exploration of these ancient sites, we embark on a scenic journey through the Turkish countryside, eventually arriving at the port city of Kusadasi.

Overnight: Kusadasi

Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 7: Kusadasi

We journey to the nearby town of Selcuk to explore the historic marvel that is ancient Ephesus. Ephesus (Rev. 2:1–7), once a bustling port city with a population of 250,000, still reveals the grandeur of its past through impressive excavations. Our tour of this ancient city includes the iconic Library, the bustling Agora, the magnificent theatre, and the vibrant mosaics within the aristocratic Terrace Houses. Additionally, we’ll savour a panoramic view of the surrounding ancient port area, offering valuable insights into the city’s rich history and culture.

Following our exploration of Ephesus, we proceed to visit the Basilica Church of St. John. This church is renowned for housing an immersion baptismal and is traditionally believed to be the resting place of John the Apostle. Stop at the site of the Temple of Artemis, an iconic structure listed as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. To conclude our day, we pay a visit to the House of Mother Mary, adding a spiritual dimension to our exploration of this historically significant region.
