we will visit:

Hierapolis: The king of Pergamon, Eumenes II, founded the city in 190 BC. It was named Hierapolis after the Amazon queen Hiera, the wife of Telephos, the founder of Pergamon. (Pergamon is also called Pergamum or Pergamos). In 60 AD, at the time of the Roman emperor Nero, Hierapolis was destroyed by an earthquake, During the reconstruction, the city lost its Hellenistic style and became a typical Roman city and an important center because of its commercial and religious position. In 80 AD, St. Philip came to Hierapolis and was murdered by the Jewish inhabitants. Hierapolis was conquered by the Turks at the end of the 12th century.

Pamukkale: “Cotton Castle” in Turkish, is the 8th wonder of the world for Turkish people. The water (35 degrees Celsius) flowing down the cliffs of Pamukkale has turned the area into a cotton-white color and sculpted this fantastic formation of stalactites and pools. Pamukkale is a very popular destination, the amazing white calcium pools which cling to the side of a ridge, have long been one of the most famous postcard images of Turkey. It is the largest and most beautiful example of an elaborate calcium formation in the world, dominating the landscape for miles around. Pamukkale was formed when a spring with a high dissolved calcium bicarbonate content cascaded over the edge of the cliff, which cooled and hardened leaving calcium deposits. This formed large natural pools, shelves, and ridges, in which tourists could plunge and splash in the warm water. The limestone waters emerge from the ground at a temperature of 35 degrees Celsius. In this white wonderland, there is an abundance of hot springs that are recommended for the treatment of hypertension, heart diseases, rheumatism, circulatory problems, nervous disorders, digestive diseases, nervous and physical exhaustion, eye and skin diseases, and nutritional disorders.

Theatre: A great well-preserved 91 meters high, Greek-style building, situated on a hillside. After the earthquake of 60 AD in the Flavius era, the theater’s construction was started in 62 A.D. However, it was not completed in the Hadrian era but in the Severus Era in 206 A.D. The cavea is separated into 7 parts by 8 steps, and there are 50 seats. The Diozoma (a kind of passage) is in the middle of the cavea with a vomitorium with 2 vaults. There are 10 columns in front of the kingdom box and orchestra, which are 3.66 meters high. The front door of the scene has 5 gates and 6 niches. The niches are behind the columns which are decorated with oyster shells and among the columns adorned with statues. Many statues were found during the excavations. There are marble embossments on the wall which is behind the scene.

After the tour, back to the hotel or Kusadasi cruise port.
