08:30. After an early breakfast in the hotel, pick-up to join a small group for a full-day excursion, touring the rich offerings of Bursa. A diamond among Turkey’s cosmopolitan centers. Leaving the sprawl of Istanbul behind, driving to the coastline of Marmara Sea at Gebze, then boarding the ferry for a crossing to Yalova before continuing to Bursa.
Approximately three hours jaunt south from Istanbul, Green Bursa became the imperial seat of the Ottoman Empire in 1326 under its founding sultan, Osman Gazi, picturesquely set in the shadow of Uludag, the 2543 meter peak, known to the ancient Mycians as Mount Olympos, and rich in Islamic history and architecture. In the old city district, you can delight in the beauty of Iznik’s decorative tile work at the Grand/Ulu Mosque and the Green Mausoleum, which is the octagonal tomb of Sultan Mehmet I, who reigned from 1413 until he died in 1421. A walk across the park that faces the Ulu Mosque brings you to the covered traditional bazaar as well as the Koza Han/Cocoon House, which was the center of Bursa’s flourishing silk trade for centuries.
Bursa has a positive reputation among Turks for a special dish”Iskender Kebab“. There will be a lunch break to test this scrumptious recipe at a traditional Turkish food restaurant that specializes in it, then continues towards Bursa’s famous pine-forested Uludag/Mount Olympos for a relaxing and picturesque cable car ride. Drive back to Istanbul, boarding once again the ferry from Yalova, and drop off at your hotel.
