Tour Plan

Day 1 - Christmas Eve in Beyoğlu

Begin your Christmas journey in the historic district of Beyoğlu, long regarded as Istanbul’s European heart and home to many of the city’s Christian communities. Stroll along the festive avenues and hidden lanes as your guide introduces the history of Christmas celebrations in Istanbul, from the Levantine and Armenian traditions to Greek Orthodox and Catholic customs.

Visit a selection of historic churches in the area, such as St. Anthony of Padua, Santa Maria Draperis, and other significant places of worship, each reflecting a different architectural style and spiritual heritage.

The journey continues to the Crimean Memorial Church, a lesser-known yet deeply significant Anglican landmark built in memory of British soldiers who lost their lives during the Crimean War. Inside, discover its remarkable modern art frescoes, including Pre-Raphaelite stained glass windows, intricate stone carvings, and symbolic memorial plaques that reflect Victorian-era spirituality and craftsmanship.

As candlelight and seasonal decorations fill the neighbourhood, hear stories of midnight masses, Christmas carols, and how Istanbul’s multicultural society embraced the festive season throughout the centuries. The evening concludes with the optional Christmas Eve Dinner or Christmass Eve Service in one of Beyoglu’s churches.

Day 2 - Sacred Service & the Historic Quarter of Balat

The day begins with a morning Christmas service at St. Esprit Cathedral, the principal Roman Catholic cathedral of Istanbul.

Following the service, continue to the atmospheric neighborhood of Balat, once home to Greek Orthodox, Armenian, Jewish, and Catholic communities. Visit the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, the spiritual center of the Eastern Orthodox world, and learn about its role in global Christianity. Explore the remarkable Bulgarian Iron Church (St. Stephen), a unique architectural masterpiece built entirely of cast iron. The walk through Balat reveals colorful houses, historic synagogues, churches, and stories of coexistence that define Istanbul’s enduring cultural fabric. The tour concludes in the early afternoon.
