The Experience

What this journey feels like

This journey feels like walking through the pages of early Christian history. It is the stillness of standing among the ruins of communities addressed in Revelation, the power of hearing their stories where they first unfolded, and the perspective that comes from seeing faith, empire and everyday life meet in the same ancient streets.

From the acropolis of Pergamon and the monumental remains of Sardis to the marble avenues of Ephesus, each site adds another layer to the story. In Cappadocia, the experience shifts from the cities of the Roman world to cave churches, underground chambers and valleys shaped by both nature and belief. More than a sequence of archaeological visits, this is a journey of connection—between scripture and place, history and faith, and the past and the questions it continues to inspire.

“He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”

Day by Day

Your 6-day itinerary

Izmir

The journey begins in the city praised for remaining faithful through persecution.

Arrive at Izmir Airport, where you will be welcomed by your guide and begin exploring the first of the Seven Churches of Revelation. Discover ancient Smyrna, a prosperous Roman port whose early Christian community was commended for its perseverance. Walk through the remains of the Agora, once the commercial and civic heart of the city, and learn how faith developed within one of Asia Minor’s most important urban centers. Continue to the Church of St. Polycarp, viewed from outside if renovation restrictions remain in place. The church commemorates the bishop and early Christian martyr closely associated with the community of Smyrna. After the visit, transfer to your hotel and enjoy the evening at leisure.

Power, learning and faith meet among the cities of northern Asia Minor.

Travel north to Pergamon, once a powerful capital known for its scholarship, monumental architecture and religious importance. Explore the hilltop Acropolis, where the remains of temples, palaces and civic buildings overlook the surrounding landscape. See the site associated with the Altar of Zeus, the ruins of the renowned Library of Pergamon and the steep ancient theatre. As you explore, consider the city’s biblical reference as the place “where Satan’s throne is” and the challenges faced by its early Christian community. Continue to Thyatira, an ancient commercial center known for its trade guilds. Visit the archaeological remains and learn about the message addressed to the church in Revelation. Return to Izmir after a full day of touring.

Three ancient communities reveal messages of vigilance, endurance and renewal.

Begin at Sardis, once one of the wealthiest cities of the ancient world. Explore the Temple of Artemis, the Byzantine church, the restored gymnasium and the remarkable synagogue while reflecting on Revelation’s call for the community to awaken and renew its faith. Continue to Philadelphia, remembered as the church of endurance. See the remains of the Byzantine basilica and surviving columns that testify to the city’s long Christian history. The day concludes at Laodicea, a prosperous center criticized in Revelation for being “neither hot nor cold.” Walk among the remains of its theatres, churches, streets and baths while learning how the city’s wealth and water system shaped the imagery of the biblical message. Transfer to Denizli for the overnight stay.

Stay Denizli Meals Breakfast, Lunch

The Seven Churches journey culminates in one of the ancient world’s greatest cities.

Travel to Ephesus, the best-preserved classical city on the route and one of the most significant centers of early Christianity. Walk along its marble streets to the Library of Celsus, the Great Theatre and the civic buildings that formed the backdrop to the ministry of the Apostle Paul. Continue to the Basilica of St. John, traditionally associated with the apostle’s burial place, and visit the House of the Virgin Mary, a peaceful sanctuary believed by tradition to have been her final home. After completing the Seven Churches route, transfer to Izmir Airport for the flight to Kayseri. Upon arrival, continue by road to your hotel in Cappadocia.

Stay Cappadocia Meals Breakfast, Lunch

Faith and landscape come together in a world carved from stone.

An optional hot air balloon flight may be available at sunrise, subject to weather conditions and advance confirmation. Begin the guided tour at Devrent Valley, known for rock formations shaped by imagination and time. Continue to the Göreme Open-Air Museum, where rock-cut churches and surviving frescoes reveal the spiritual life of Cappadocia’s early Christian communities. Take in the landscape from Göreme Panorama and visit Uçhisar, whose towering rock formation dominates the surrounding valleys. Complete the day at a local carpet cooperative, where traditional weaving techniques, natural dyes and regional designs are introduced by local artisans.

Stay Cappadocia Meals Breakfast, Lunch

The final day explores hidden settlements, village traditions and the valleys of Cappadocia.

Explore Özkonak Underground City, a complex network of tunnels, chambers and communal spaces created beneath the Cappadocian landscape. Learn how underground settlements provided protection and supported community life during periods of insecurity. Continue through the region’s valleys and villages, including Rose Valley, Pigeon Valley and Ortahisar. In Avanos, meet local pottery artisans whose craft has been shaped by the red clay of the Kızılırmak River, and stop to view the celebrated Three Beauties fairy chimneys. In the evening, transfer to Kayseri Airport for the flight to Istanbul. The tour concludes upon arrival in Istanbul. Any onward airport transfer or Istanbul accommodation should be confirmed according to the final booking arrangements.
