The Experience

What this journey feels like

This journey feels like stepping through the screen into a world that is both familiar and entirely real. Harbour walls become Astapor, earthen kasbahs become the cities of Essos, and the desert horizon seems to carry the scale and silence of the Dothraki Sea.

Yet the journey also reveals what existed before the cameras arrived: Atlantic trading ports, caravan architecture, Amazigh communities and film studios that have shaped decades of international productions. It is a fan journey, but also a deeper look at the Moroccan landscapes and craftsmanship that made the fantasy believable.

“A mind needs books as a sword needs a whetstone.”

Day by Day

Your 7-day itinerary

Marrakech

The journey begins in the production gateway to Morocco’s cinematic south.

Arrive in Marrakech and transfer privately to your hotel. The remainder of the day is at leisure. A private orientation, themed welcome dinner or introduction to Morocco’s film history can be added.

Stay Marrakech, selected riad or hotel Meals None

Walk the ramparts where Daenerys changed the balance of power.

Travel to Essaouira and explore the fortified harbour, Skala and medina areas used to represent Astapor. Your guide connects the filming scenes with the city’s real maritime history and architecture. Enjoy time for seafood and independent exploration before staying overnight by the Atlantic.

Stay Essaouira, selected riad Meals Breakfast, Lunch

The road into Essos crosses Morocco’s most cinematic mountains.

Travel from Essaouira via Marrakech and the High Atlas toward Aït Benhaddou. Explore the UNESCO-listed ksar and discuss its screen roles, production logistics and real history as a fortified caravan settlement. Continue to Ouarzazate for the overnight stay. For a more comfortable version, an extra Marrakech night may be inserted.

Stay Ouarzazate, selected kasbah hotel Meals Breakfast, Lunch

Behind the fantasy lies Morocco’s extraordinary film-making tradition.

Visit Atlas Studios or another available studio complex to see sets and production spaces used across international films and series. Continue to Kasbah Taourirt and explore the architecture that helped define the visual language of Essos. Additional studio visits, specialist film commentary or photography time can be added according to access.

Stay Ouarzazate, selected kasbah hotel Meals Breakfast, Lunch

The journey leaves the sets behind and enters a landscape that needs no invention.

Travel east through valleys, kasbah country and desert plains toward Merzouga. Arrive at Erg Chebbi for sunset and settle into a selected desert lodge or camp. A camel ride, private 4x4 transfer, themed photography session or desert walk can be arranged.

Stay Merzouga, selected desert lodge or camp Meals Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

The final chapter can lead back to Marrakech, onward to Fes or deeper into Morocco.

Begin with sunrise in the Sahara before departing. The original source route continues directly to Fes, creating an extremely long day. For a private journey, the route should instead be designed around the traveler’s onward plans and comfort level. Options include an overnight in the Dades Valley, return toward Marrakech, or continuation to Fes with an intermediate stop.

Stay Marrakech, Fes or en-route hotel, according to final design Meals Breakfast, Lunch

The filming-location journey ends, but Morocco offers many possible sequels.

Transfer privately to the selected airport or continue with an extension. Additional nights in Fes, Marrakech, the Sahara or the Atlantic coast can be arranged.

Before You Book

Good to Know

Filming-site access can change, and not every set remains permanently preserved. The journey should distinguish confirmed filming locations from places included for visual similarity or broader cinematic context. The original route contains an impractical Merzouga-to-Fes transfer of around eight hours after desert activities. A tailor-made version should normally add an intermediate overnight or select a different end point.

Is this journey right for you?

This journey is ideal for fans who also enjoy history, architecture and landscape. It should not be presented as a studio theme park; many locations are living towns, archaeological sites or working production facilities.
